Emma Sturtz

October 9, 1923 — December 21, 2016

Emma Jean Sturtz, 93 of Scottdale, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, December 21, 2016.  She was born October 9, 1923 in Scottdale a daughter of the late Edgar Walker Steele and Elizabeth Woodward Steele.

Following graduation from Scottdale High School, Mrs. Sturtz began working in the office for Uptegraff Maufacturing, Scottdale.  She was later employed in the bindry for the Laurel Group Press Newspapers and also at Grays Studio.  Emma Jean was also an Avon representative for a number of years and an avid card player.  She was a volunteer at Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant and was an active member of the Bullskin Senior Citizens.  She was a faithful member of Christ United Methodist Church, Scottdale and was a member of the Beta Y Gradale.  She had also belonged to the Scottdale Chapter 383 Order of Eastern Star and served on its advisory board.  She was a past Mother advisor for the Scottdale Rainbow Girls and served as a co-leader for the Girl Scouts.  Emma Jean enjoyed camping with family and friends and winter trips to Florida.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Meryl Sturtz, her daughter in law, Lois Sturtz, her son in law, Mevlin L. Malik, Jr; an infant twin sister, Evelyn and sister, Eleanor Guest.

She is survived by her loving children, her son, James D. Sturtz;  her two daughters, Elizabeth S. “Betsy” Malik; and Cynthia S. Riedman and her husband Tom; five grandchildren, Michele Ferguson; Jamie Lee Sturtz; First Sergeant Matthew James Sturtz (Kelly); Caran Leigh Hayes (Chris); Robyn A. Troetschel (Donn);  six great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Alyssa and Samantha Ferguson; Logan Sturtz; Benjamin and Alexander Hayes and two step-great grandchildren, Karl and Nadine Troetschel; two nephews, Ed and Doug Guest and a niece, Brenda Johnson.

Family and friends are welcome on Thursday from 4 to 8 pm and Friday from 10 to 11 am  GRAFT-JACQUILLARD FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, INC. 303 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale where her funeral service will be held at 11 am Friday with Rev. Kathleen Barnhart officiating.  Interment will follow in Green Ridge Memorial Park, Pennsville.  Memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 203 Market St. Scottdale, Pa. 15683 .
